Some objects have a way of stopping you in your tracks. The Toucan is one of them.
Part of Belgian designer Stefan Schöning's Langkawi collection, this striking bronze sculpture is inspired by the ancient global tradition of mask-making — a craft that spans continents, centuries, and cultures. Schöning named the collection after Langkawi, a Malaysian island famed for its master woodcarvers and the extraordinary hardwood that grows there. But instead of wood, he chose bronze. And the result is something altogether different: raw, rhythmic, and quietly mesmerising.
The Toucan mask has a personality all its own. Like every piece in the Langkawi series — alongside Eclipse, Elephant, Offspring, and Sunrise — it is anthropomorphic in feeling yet abstract in form. Symmetrical in its asymmetry. Bold, but never loud. It carries Schöning's signature minimalist restraint: nothing added that doesn't need to be there, nothing removed that should stay.
Bronze isn't just a material — it's a statement. Composed of copper and tin, it has been prized across civilisations for its weight, warmth, and extraordinary ability to hold fine detail. Over time, it only deepens in character. This is a piece you'll hand down.
